Ok folks here we go,

Hets recertification will be Tues June 15, 6pm at the heliport for hover exit

Sat June 19, 8am at Whistler Heliski @ the helipad for Hets recertification

Please try and make it out to this training as you need to recertify anually. This is your chance to do it on home turf.

The remainder of June will be spent doing high angle rope rescue work.

June 10th – Rope Rescue stations. Stations will include knots, anchors, belay, load, following fixed rope, ascending and descending ropes. Bottomless lake park in creekside access via Whistler road then left on Aspen Dr. 7pm start.

June 17th – Rope Rescue scenario high angle. Falcon Cres bluff. 7pm Start

June 24th – Rope Rescue / high angle advanced scenario.. .. 7pm start.

There will be a debrief of the Ito search including members from PEP from Vancouver. Also there is a great deal of organization that needs to go into the truck and loading bay as the weatherhaven, crevasse rescue tripod, and ladders have been deposited there. Rope rescue kit needs clean up if anyone has time this week.

Brandywine Falls practice

Scenario:
Another tourist has fallen off a cliff and into a local river, and is stranded on a isolated shelf 1m above fast flowing water. Search teams will have to find the subject safely, and extract a subject from above using conventional rope rescue techniques. This practice will start from the search base at 6:30pm.

Practice Location: Brandywine Falls (hopefully), or in the Cheakamus canyon
Team Leader: Braden

Practice was a success teams located subject at the base of Brandywine falls at about 7:45pm. A top down rope rescue was preformed using two 300ft ropes. A redirected 3:1haul system for maximum throw on the haul system. 260ft to the bottom, 250ft was free hanging over a large overhang which kept rescuer from being hit by loose rock. Subject was recovered by 9pm.

Alexander Falls Training May 6, 2008

A slope assist raise setup was used to extract our patients route #6 was the access point
With the 2010 games approaching a realistic swift water access scenario will be conducted Tuesday night at Alexander Falls at 7pm.

The scenario will involve aspects of approaching a swift water environment from above utilizing ropes, and anchors, and preparing the rescuer's with appropriate swift water equipment.

The scenerio: A tourist has gone past the fences at the falls looking to get a better picture. He slips, and ends up stranded, and injured in a canyon with fast flowing water.

Please be at the room at 6:30pm or meet us at the falls at 7pm.
Come equipped with harness, gloves, helmet, P.P.E. and your turnout gear. Be prepared to wade through Isothermal snow to access the site.

The Ground Search and Rescue (GSAR) Instructor course introduces the participants to the relevancy of standards, certification, duty of care, educational techniques, instructional methods, and assessment and evaluation strategies. The course also covers GSAR course administration, lesson plans, instructional materials and student evaluations.
Who: All SAR Groups in BC
Where: Prince George
When: May 23 – 25, 2008
The course hours are:
Friday 1900 – 2200hrs
Saturday 0800 – 2100hrs
Sunday 0800 – 1600hrs
Prerequisites: Participants must be a member of a SAR Group and have GSAR certification. If you are a member of a SAR Group that does not, at present, have a GSAR Instructor please contact Dennette.

Rope Rescue Team Member/Team Leader Evaluation May 23 – 25, 2008

Rope Rescue Team Member/Team Leader Evaluation
Deadline Reminder – April 27th
The evaluation will consist of a written exam, practical skills tests at individual stations and performance in various roles in rope rescue scenarios. There will be no instruction during the evaluation. Participants can expect to demonstrate all of the rope rescue skills as they appear in the manual and in the course.
Applicants should prepare by working with their group's existing Rope Rescue Team Members and Team Leaders. A log, detailing at least 20 hours of practice since the course, must accompany the participant’s application.
Who: All SAR Groups in the South West Region
Where: Squamish
When: May 23 – 25, 2008
The evaluation hours are:
• Friday 1900 – 2200 hrs (classroom and written exam)
• Saturday 0830 – 1700 hrs (in the field)
• Sunday 0830 – 1600 hrs (in the field)
Prerequisites: Participants must:
• Be a member of a SAR Group,
• Be physically fit and able to participate in all aspects of the evaluation,
• Be certified in GSAR,
• Have completed the Rope Rescue Team Member course, and
• Have logged 20 hours of practice prior to applying submit log along with application.
• Applicants for Rope Rescue Team Leader must already have Rope Rescue Team Member certification.
Costs: There will be no course fee, however students will be responsible for their own travel, meals and accommodation costs.
Note: The BC SAR Association will cover 65% of student mileage (carpooling required).

• Helmet (UIAA approved)
• Seat and chest harness (UIAA, no improvised harnesses)
• Well-fitting leather gloves
• Safety glasses
• Sturdy footwear
• Clothing suitable for the weather

New MR Applicants
The following application package includes a brief description of the training program and an application form. Applicants should review the Pre-Requisite Skills list (included) and determine which MR level they best suit. Your application form should reflect your mountaineering and rescue experience as outlined in the Pre-Requisite Skills list. References with contact numbers are required. All applications must have the signature of the training officer or president of their SAR Group to ensure that they authorize your MR training application. If you are a new SAR Volunteer we recommend that you work to complete the pre-requisite GSAR and Rope Rescue (RR) courses immediately in order to demonstrate a commitment to the SAR community.
Do not be overwhelmed by the application, what is being looked for is the applicants mountaineering, climbing and rescue experience. As we cannot possibly provide all the training and experience in the mountain rescue courses we want to give credit for you’re past training and experience. Remember to list all 3rd, 4th and 5th class hikes, scrambles and climbs that you have done as well as any winter or glacier experience. If you cannot remember exact dates try and put in a month and year. If you have any other questions, please feel free to call the SAR training coordinator at 604 528-5791.
All applications are to be sent to SAR Training at the JIBC at 715 McBride Boulevard, New Westminster, BC V3L 5T4, or by fax 604-528-5798.
After the application deadline the applications will be reviewed by the JIBC, to ensure that the applicant’s previous training and experience meet the requirements for the level they are applying for (MR1or MR2). Mountain Rescue courses will be scheduled and locations chosen as numbers dictate. The candidates will be notified of the locations and dates of the MR courses giving as much notice as possible. Due to limited funding, we cannot guarantee that all courses will be available to new applicants. It may take a couple of years to get through all the courses.
Once certified, the MR trained volunteers will be expected to be available and participate in rescues in their area as needed. As with other SAR calls MR trained volunteers may be called upon to provide mutual aid to other SAR Groups around the province. MR trained volunteers will be expected to maintain their skills through practices. MR trained volunteers must maintain their JIBC Rope Rescue certification, which requires participation in organized practices of at least 20 hrs per year.

This Swiftwater/Flood Rescue technician SFRT (formerly called the SRT 1) course is open to SAR Volunteers who need SFRT (SRT 1) re-certification (every 3 years) and for SAR Volunteers who have completed the SFRO course (formerly known as SSO).

International Snow Science Workshop

This international symposium of snow science and avalanche practice will be held from September 21st-27th, 2008 at the Telus Whistler Conference Centre in Whistler, BC, Canada.

The ISSW is the biggest International Snow Conference inthe world and was held last held in 2006 in Telluride/USA where theyattracted over 700 delegates from 28 countries. We are on track to providingan equally interesting and well attended conference. Whistler is the site ofthe Alpine, Nordic and Sliding Sports during the 2010 Olympics and manypeople are excited to come to our town and see the venues before the games.Registration has started last November with many of delegates already signedup.

For the past few years BCSARA has used a portion of its grant monies to fund first aid training for volunteers. Our goal was for every SAR responder in the field to have some level of first aid training and we asked the JIBC for assistance in administering the program. Our first budget was a trial figure and since then we have been using past year averages to set the funding limits. The JIBC staff set up a workable program and always came in within budget. They continue to offer this service to us and we appreciate their efforts.
This year the BCSARA Finance Committee felt that with a number of financial initiatives being considered, and with a new Training Committee working to organize our commitment with our training partners, we should attempt to have a more defined budget process so we know what our financial plans should be.
We asked the JIBC to amend our first aid roll out for the 2008/2009 fiscal year in the hope that, by soliciting expressions of interest from the SAR groups, we would be better able to create an overall BCSARA budget. A deadline was added, as was a “first come first serve” provision, all in the hopes of accomplishing our goal.
This attempt on our part has not accomplished our intent and we apologize to the SAR groups and the JIBC for any inconvenience caused by implementing this new process. What resulted were expressions of interest from more groups than had ever done so in any one year previously and as a result, within weeks, those expressions of interest had not only exceeded all previous year’s averages, but also the maximum budget. This is not going to work because we would need to deny groups’ first aid funding assistance before we even start training or the first bills come in.
The requirement to seek pre-approval is therefore retracted. First aid training can begin and requests for reimbursement made as per the JIBC letter. The BCSARA will monitor the expenditures as we have in past years.
